My New Years Resolutions: Reflections on the Value of Good Health

Happy 2005 from All of Us at The Wellness Club. We wish you and your families one of the best years ever!

This was a sobering holiday season for me in many ways, but it taught me some valuable lessons and helped me make good resolutions for this year. I’ll pass on my story in case it might help you, too.

I was involved in an automobile accident, had to see my family doctor for the aches and pains, was hit with a lawsuit, and then to cap it all off a member of my family passed away. As you might well imagine, this got me to thinking about what is and isn’t important, and about how we pay for the things we see as being important to us.

First, the auto accident: Icy streets, I was able to come to a stop when the light changed, the driver behind me wasn’t. Bang! Fortunately there was insurance all around and I thought all would be well. Of course, the insurance did not reimburse for the fear, pain and inconvenience of the ordeal, but I was sure that because I faithfully paid my insurance premiums all these years (and the other driver did hit me from behind after all!) that everything would be “looked after.” As it turned out, I was naive, and as anyone who has had an auto accident can tell you, it wasn’t so easy! Despite the fact that I’ve been with the same company for many years (long enough to have paid for a new car with all my premiums!) and I’ve been claim free, it was a very difficult and stressful experience, and I’ll never look at insurance companies in the same way again.

Of course, being involved in an MVA (motor vehicle accident) means doctors, x-rays, and prescriptions for muscle relaxers and pain pills. Silly me, I should have known to call Dr. Myatt right away. The muscle relaxers and pain pills did nothing but make me dopey. I guess to some that means feeling better, but after a week of no improvement, I called Dr. Myatt. She explained that the x-rays were necessary to rule out fractures, but that there were better, safer and more importantly effective alternatives to the chemicals that had been prescribed by my conventional doctor. “He has done the best he knows for you” said Dr. Myatt, “but muscle relaxers don’t heal bruised muscles! Now let’s get going with some things that will actually help you feel better and heal faster.” In a couple of days the pain and stiffness were just a distant memory! The conventional treatment and drugs were paid for by my “insurance” but I paid for Dr. Myatt’s fees myself and her advice was a bargain. (Here’s a tip: she recommended Bromelain and Grape Seed Extract, and some special exercises.)

Just as I thought the car accident was behind me, I was notified that the other driver was suing me! I won’t belabor the details, but the whole thing was completely groundless — a bluff on his part because he was the guilty party. As soon as I hired a lawyer to respond to his foolishness the suit was dropped. Still, it cost a pretty penny to hire that lawyer, and I’ll never see that money back. It would have been more expensive not to have hired the lawyer because the other driver had a hungry and aggressive lawyer working for him.

In addition to this, an elderly aunt passed away before Christmas. It was not unexpected, and Auntie had a number of health problems in addition to the cancer which took her. Because we knew her time was near, the family was able to gather at her bedside to celebrate one last Christmas with her. She passed peacefully with friends and family near. What was distressing for me was that I had tried to convince her to arrange a consultation with Dr. Myatt to discuss the options available to her, and get a genuine “second opinion” about how she might deal with her illnesses, but that didn’t happen. I know that Dr. Myatt cannot “cure” advanced cancer, but I also know that she has a number of patients who are confounding their conventional doctors by living long past the brief time that they had been told they have left. At first Auntie refused, saying that she didn’t believe in all that “hocus pocus stuff” of alternative medicine and preferring the traditional white-coated western way of “cut, burn and poison” to treat her cancer. When it became obvious that those methods had failed her, she considered contacting Dr. Myatt until she learned that neither her veterans benefits nor her Medicare would cover Dr. Myatt’s alternative services, so she decided against it. As Auntie remarked, “my insurance pays for all my other treatments.” (Right-o! The ones that aren’t working!). Interestingly, Auntie didn’t object in the least to paying the fees for the lawyer that she called in to help her tidy up her affairs and update her will. She also didn’t object to the huge fees demanded by the funeral home that she made her final arrangements with!

So how does all this tie together, and what does this have to do with my New Years Resolutions? Well, it made me wonder why many people don’t think twice about paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to a lawyer to help them out of some non-life-threatening predicament while they balk at paying a few hundred dollars to a doctor could help them live longer or enable them to enjoy the days they have left free of pain or disability. Auntie suffered quite a bit at the end and was certainly not as comfortable as she might have been if she has allowed Dr. Myatt to help her, but she chose instead to save a few dollars by going with the treatment that was covered by her insurance.

Most people are so accustomed to having medical expenses covered by insurance that they cannot think of any other way, yet these same folks don’t object to spending thousands of dollars for a lawyer or an accountant even though neither of those professionals typically deal with our life or health. Many other people (I have a sister who is one of them) think nothing of paying a cosmetic surgeon thousands of dollars for breast implants or nose jobs – work definitely not covered by insurance. Still others like Auntie will scrimp and save, avoiding potentially helpful advice from someone like Dr. Myatt because the fees are not covered by insurance, and then without so much as a quibble pay many, many thousands of dollars for a lavish funeral. We know that our lawyers, our accountants, our cosmetic surgeons and our funeral homes are not generally covered or paid for by insurance and we pay with little or no objection. Not so with our doctors – we expect them to work for “free” – at least free to us, paid for by some sort of “insurance” program.

So, what are my New Years Resolutions? First, I resolve to love and enjoy my family more. Every day that we are allowed to be together is a gift. Next, I resolve to try to leave my new car and my precious body at home if the streets are icy – no more needless risk-taking for me! I resolve to call Dr. Myatt sooner sooner instead of later for what ails me even though it is a modest but out-of-pocket expense. It was so very worth it to start feeling better the same day I talked to her! Finally, I resolve to take control of my own health instead of leaving it to some insurance company or HMO. I had forgotten how I had done just that a number of years ago when I first met Dr. Myatt and together we got me back on the road to good health. It seemed expensive and “risky” to defy convention then, but today I know it was some of the smartest money I ever spent. And I resolve to book an annual medical review with Dr. Myatt (this can be done on the telephone), and more often if needed, because to me, my good health is priceless.

‘Tis the season… for Colds and Flu!

On a different note, Dr. Myatt asked me to remind everyone that this is cold and flu season, and include some information to help you keep yourself as healthy as possible.

First, make sure your immune system is in the very best shape possible:

  • Get regular exercise: exercise stimulates the immune system. Just 10 minutes of good, all-out exercise each day is all it takes!
  • Use immune-enhancing herbal formulas – Immune Support is one of the very best.
  • Practice stress reduction.
  • Use positive visualization and affirmations – Dr. Myatt’s Body / Mind video will help you develop this skill.
  • Practice meditation or a relaxation technique.

Give your body the raw materials it needs to keep your immune system fit:

  • Eat plenty of protein. The body needs generous protein for maintenance and repair.
  • Avoid fruit juices and sugars – sugars suppress the immune system.
  • Be sure to use a good multi-vitamin. Dr. Myatt’s MaxiMultiis the very best available.
  • Drink 64 ounces (2 quarts) of pure water or herb teas (non-caffeinated) daily.
  • Be well-rested.

If you do catch something, start Dr. Myatt’s Acute Immune Protocol right away.

The “acute protocol” should be started for all active infections: colds, flu, other respiratory, skin, dental and internal infections. In many instances, antibiotics are unnecessary. This protocol may also be used alone for acute infections.

  • B.A.M. (Broad Anti Microbial):
Suggested dose: 60 to 80 drops, 3 to 4 times per day. Take in a small amount (1 to 2 ounces) of water on an empty stomach (at least 15 minutes before meals or between meals).
  • Immune Boost:
1 teaspoon, 3 to 4 times per day. Take with B.A.M.
  • Bromelain:
2 caps, 3 to 4 times per day between meals.
  • Vitamin C (buffered):
1,000 mg every two hours throughout the day.
  • Whey protein:
2 scoops per day (more if desired). Take in water or other liquid or as a “pudding” (see our recipes).
  • selenium: 1,000mcg per day until symptoms subside.

Immune Boost and B.A.M. are potent liquid tinctures that keep indefinitely, so I recommend having them on hand right now. Don’t wait until you need them to place an order! Those two days waiting for them to arrive can make the difference between having a full-blown cold or other infection or staying well! Bromelain, vitamin C and selenium also keep well and should be on hand in your medicine cabinet. I also recommend having a bottle of Inspirol inhalant on hand for colds and sinusitis. This super-powerful inhaler is hard to find in most health food stores but WOW! Does it do a great job of opening the sinuses and clearing your head and lungs!

With these items on hand, colds and other winter infections and ailments don’t stand a chance 🙂

Until next time,

Healthy, Happy New Year to One and All!

L-Lysine

An Essential Amino Acid

Amino acids have many functions in the body. They are the building blocks for all body proteins – structural proteins that build muscle, connective tissues, bones and other structures, and functional proteins in the form of thousands of metabolically active enzymes

Amino acids provide our body with nitrogen that is essential for growth and maintenance of all tissues.

Because our body can’t make lysine, we must get it in the foods we eat. In people for whom wheat (breads) is the predominant food staple, lysine deficiency can occur, because only small amounts of lysine are found in grain.

Low dietary lysine may lead to overall protein deficiency symptoms, such as a compromised immune system and failure to grow, and also to heightened levels of stress and anxiety.

In the April 2004 issue of the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,” researchers reported that supplementing cereal-based diets with lysine reduced chronic anxiety and stress in a population that consumed wheat as a primary diet component. This suggests that Lysine supplementation may improve your mental well-being if this amino acid is lacking in your diet.

Though conventional medicine tries to claim there is no proof, many people report great success in using L-lysine to combat the herpes simplex virus that produces common “cold sores” and genital herpes sores. Lysine exerts it’s antiviral effects by inhibiting the replication of the herpes simplex virus. By holding the virus in check L-lysine may decrease the number of cold sores or genital herpes outbreaks, and it may also help the sores heal more quickly. Users find that supplementing with 1 to 3 grams of lysine each day may limit recurrences, and taking it as soon as symptoms are noticed may reduce the length of time that herpes outbreaks last.

Since the virusis similar, some practitioners and researchers feel that L-lysine may have a beneficial effect toward reducing outbreaks of herpes zoster or “shingles.”

There is also evidence that L-lysine may be helpful in alleviating post-herpetic neuralgia.

L-lysine can help the gastrointestinal tract absorb calcium and reduce how much of this mineral is excreted in urine. Supplementing with both lysine and arginine, another protein-building amino acid, stimulates the cellsthat build new bone tissue. This combination of amino acids can also increase the synthesis of collagen, a structural protein important in maintaining the health of connective tissue, including cartilage, tendons and skin.

It should be noted that arginine is contra-indicated for those with the herpes virus as it can precipitate herpes outbreaks.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Natural Support For This Common Problem

Normal blood pressure is 120/80 or less. Blood pressures higher than 140/90 are elevated; higher than 200/115 are dangerous and should be treated immediately. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is often without symptoms.

Causes of high blood pressure include atherosclerosis, high dietary sodium to potassium intake, nutrient deficiencies (especially calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C), overweight, smoking, and underlying disease processes. Greater than 90% of high blood pressure is considered “essential,” meaning that it is not caused by another disease. Such blood pressure elevations are largely related to diet and lifestyle. The disease is virtually unknown in undeveloped countries where unprocessed foods are eaten and people maintain a high level of physical activity.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Do NOT use caffeine, tobacco, or alcohol.
  • Maintain a normal weight.
  • Include high potassium foods (fruits and vegetables) lavishly in the diet. Do not salt foods. (Or use potassium chloride as an alternative salt).
  • Practice stress reduction techniques. Long-term stress, or extreme reactions to stress, can elevate blood pressure.
  • Avoid caffeine-containing medications. Check with your doctor if you are on prescription medications. Some can elevate blood pressure.
  • Exercise regularly.

PRIMARY SUPPORT

  • Maxi Multi: 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals. Optimal (not minimal) doses of antioxidants (ACES), magnesium, B complex vitamins, and bioflavonoids are particularly important for the heart. Take additional B complex vitamins if your multiple does not contain optimal doses. B vitamins, (especially B6, B12, and folic acid) lower homocysteine levels, an independent risk for heart disease that many researchers feel is more important than cholesterol levels.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids:
Flax seed meal, 2 teaspoons per day with food
    OR
    Flax seed capsules
: 2-4 caps, 3 times per day (target dose range: 6-12 caps per day)
    OR
    Flax seed oil
    : 1 tablespoon per day
    OR
    Max EPA
(Omega-3 rich fish oil): 1-2 caps, 3 times per day with meals (target dose: 3-6 caps per day).
  • CoQ10: 50-300mg per day. This powerful antioxidant, produced by the body, diminishes with age. It is especially valuable for all types of heart disease. CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING DRUGS deplete CoQ10.
  • Magnesium: 2 tabs, 3 times per day with meals. (Target dose: 500-1500mg per day. Maxi Multi contains 500mg).
  • Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii): 1cap, 1 times per day (target dose: 5-10mg standardized forskolin per day).

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

  • Hawthorn Plus+ (100mg standardized to 1.8% vitexin): 1-2 caps, 2-3 times per day with meals.
  • Garlitrin 4000: 1 tab, once per day with a meal. Other garlic supplements, 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals (target dose: 10,000mcg allicin per day).

TESTS

  • A hair analysis should be performed to rule out lead toxicity as a cause of high blood pressure.

DR. MYATT’S COMMENT

High blood pressure is certainly not something to be ignored, but there is evidence to suggest that we may be over-treating with drugs in this country. Most cases of high blood pressure can be successfully managed without drugs. (Drugs are sometimes necessary in cases of severely elevated blood pressure).

If your self-care measures fail to bring improvement within three months, consult an holistic physician who can guide you. Never discontinue blood pressure medications without the advice of a physician. Certain medications can cause rebound high blood pressure.

STROKE / thrombosis / phlebitis

Natural Prevention Strategies

Stroke

The term “stroke” refers to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) where the brain is deprived of oxygen due to blood vessel blockage (80% of strokes) OR  the rupture of a blood vessel which causes bleeding in the brain (20% of strokes). Either of these events deprives areas of the brain of oxygen and can lead to neurological damage. A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a similar, smaller event, resolving in minutes to hours and without permanent damage. Recurrent TIA’s often precede a true stroke, and the causes of both are the same. Stroke (Cerebrovascular disease) is the most common cause of neurologic disability in Western countries.

Twenty percent of strokes are hemorrhagic, resulting from the rupture of a cerebral artery. Causes of hemorrhagic stroke include hypertension, aneurysm, blood vessel defects (inborn) and excess blood-thinning medication.

The remaining eighty percent of strokes are due to blockages resulting from emboli (a clump of blood cells or atherosclerotic plaque) in a cranial artery. Causes of infarct stroke are atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, excess blood-clotting factors (see “conditions predisposing to blood clot formation,” below), blood turbulence (due to arrhythmias, heart valve defects, arteriovenous malformation, and atherosclerosis), diabetes, and vascular inflammation.

A far lesser number of strokes may be due solely to lack of oxygen without a blockage, usually due to sympathomimetic drugs (cocaine, amphetamine), arterial compression caused by bone spurs, or circulatory insufficiency due to decreased overall circulation.

Thrombosis

“Thrombosis” refers to a blood clot that develops in a blood vessel. It is one of the leading causes of death in the Western world.

If a thrombosis forms in a coronary artery, a myocardial infarction may result. When thromboses form in the brain, the resultant oxygen deprivation may result in TIA or stroke. An emboli occurs when a clot breaks free and travels to other parts of the body. If an emboli reaches the brain, again, stroke may occur. Thromboses and emboli can also cause serious damage to lungs, kidneys — in fact, virtually any organ.

Phlebitis / Thrombophlebitis

“Thrombophlebitis,” or deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is the most common presenting vein disorder. Most vein clots begin in the valves of deep calf veins. Tissue substances are released that in turn form clumps of red blood cells (RBC’s). If these clumped blood cells remain in the leg or elsewhere, they cause redness, swelling, and pain. If they dislodge and travel to the brain, they can cause a stroke.

Causes of venous thrombosis include:

  1. Blood vessel lining injury (caused by catheters, septic phlebitis, injection of irritating substances, trauma).
  2. Excess blood clotting (due to malignant tumors, blood cell abnormalities, oral contraceptives and inflammation).
  3. Slowed blood flow (varicose veins, prolonged bed rest, heart failure, dependent immobilization of the legs such as occurs during car or air travel).

Factors which can cause blood clots

Specifically, any one of the following conditions may predispose to blood clot formation:

  • elevated homocysteine levels
  • oxidized LDL cholesterol levels
  • platelet activating factor (PAF)
  • elevated fibrinogen
  • elevated thromboxane A2, prostaglandin E2, lipooxygenase, cyclooxygenase
  • free-radical induced platelet aggregation
  • thrombin activating factor
  • deficiency of tissue-plasminogen activator (tPA)
  • increased blood viscosity
  • increased platelet count
  • increased red blood cell kinase activity
  • inflammation of the arterial wall
  • atherosclerotic plaque
  • elevated triglycerides
  • increased platelet adhesion
  • collagen-induced platelet adhesion
  • arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation
  • adenosine-induced platelet aggregation
  • epinephrine-induced platelet aggregation
  • serotonin-induced platelet aggregation
  • antigen-antibody reactions

Fibrin thrombi can be prevented by conventional anticoagulant therapy (heparin or coumarin / coumadin / warfarin compounds), but platelet aggregation is not inhibited by these agents. (Merck Manual p. 586). It is estimated that only 1/3 of all causative agents of thrombosis are blocked by the administration of conventional blood thinning drugs.

Treatment Considerations

Treatment of the underlying cause of thrombosis, and phlebitis which results in thrombosis, are the mainstays of prevention of stroke occurrence and reoccurrence. High blood pressure, high cholesterol (especially with low HDL- the “good” cholesterol), excessive blood clotting (“blood sludge”), and atherosclerosis should be addressed as indicated.  Because of the many and varied causes of thrombosis, a multi-faceted approach to anticoagulation and blood viscosity normalization is surer than conventional anticoagulant (coumadin) therapy alone.

Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Diet: eat a nutritious diet high in nutrient-rich foods. Plant foods contain phytonutrients which help prevent blood from clotting abnormally.
  • Achieve and maintain a normal weight.
  • Exercise regularly. 30 minutes, 3 times per week minimum.
  • Don’t smoke! Smoking irritates the blood vessel lining and such irritation initiates a chain of events that cause blood to clump.
  • Drink 64 ounces of pure water daily. Dehydration causes blood vessel irritation and can predispose to abnormal blood clotting.

Primary Support

  • Maxi Multi: 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals. Optimal (not minimal) doses of antioxidant nutrients (vitamin A, beta carotene, C, E, zinc, selenium), B6, B12, folic acid, bioflavonoids and magnesium are especially important. Magnesium helps prevent high blood pressure, a cause of stroke.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids: the anti-inflammatory action of Omega-3’s helps prevent blood vessel irritation.
Flax seed meal, 2 teaspoons per day with food
    OR
    Flax seed capsules
: 2-4 caps, 3 times per day (target dose range: 6-12 caps per day)
    OR
    Flax seed oil

    : 1 tablespoon per day
    OR

Max EPA (Omega-3 rich fish oil): 1-2 caps, 3 times per day with meals (target dose: 3-6 caps per day).

  • MAXI-GREENS: 3 caps, 3 times per day. Maxi greens contains a spectrum of the herbs known to maintain  normal blood viscosity. (grape seed, ginkgo, bilberry, green tea).

Additional Support

(Treat known risk factors. Consult an alternative medicine physician for further assistance):

High Cholesterol or Triglyceride levels:

Diabetes (which predisposes to atherosclerosis):

  • Follow additional recommendations for Diabetes

Atherosclerosis:

High fibrinogen:

High homocysteine levels:

  • B6, B12 and folic acid. (NOTE: Maxi Multi contains optimal doses of these nutrients. Take additional B6, B12 and folic acid only if you are not taking Maxi Multi, MyPacks or the equivalent).

High ferritin (storage iron):

  • Vitamin C: 5,000 mg per day in divided doses.
  • Grape seed extract: 150 mg per day.

Primary Materia Medica for Stroke Prevention

(Professional descriptions follow. For laymen description of these same herbs, please refer to Twelve Important Herbs to Know )

The following list represents the most well-researched herbs for stroke prevention:

Garlic Allium sativa

Garlic is one of the most important cardiovascular botanicals and best documented blood-thinning agents.  It protects against collagen-induced, arachidonic acid-induced, ADP-induced, and epinephrine-induced platelet aggregation. Garlic inhibits cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase-induced thromboxane A2 synthesis. Clinical studies have also documented garlic’s effectiveness in treating many factors involved in atherosclerosis, including high blood pressure, high LDL-cholesterol, and high triglycerides. Garlic decreases platelet aggregation while simultaneously increasing HDL cholesterol and fibrinolysis.

Ginkgo Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo exerts considerable effect on platelet aggregation, adhesion and degranulation. Specifically, ginkgo inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF) and reduces platelet aggregation induced by ADP, collagen, and arachidonic acid. It has membrane-stabilizing, antioxidant and free radical scavenging effects, and improves blood flow, oxygen and glucose utilization in the brain. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) stimulates endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) and prostacycline.  In animal studies, GBE has shown to stimulate nerve cell regeneration, making it potentially useful both for stroke prevention and post-stroke treatment.

Turmeric Curcuma longa

Curcumin, the yellow pigment of Curcuma longa, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It inhibits platelet aggregation by inhibiting thromboxanes and leukotrienes and promoting the formation of prostacycline.

<Bromelain Anasas comosus

Bromelain is a mixture of enzymes found primarily in the stem of the pineapple plant. It exerts antiinflammatory effects by inhibition of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Bromelain blocks production of kinnins and possesses fibrinolytic activity secondary to plasminogen activator, which may also account for the anti-metastatic properties seen in vivo.

Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus

The flavonoids in Bilberry, specifically anthocyanosides, promote prostacycline production and inhibit platelet aggregation in a manner similar to ginkgo. The potent antioxidant effects seen in this herb stabilize the vascular system and are therefore useful in treating capillary fragility, venous insufficiency, and varicose veins.

Grape Seed Vitus vinifera

Oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPC’s) from grape seed and other species, such as Landis’ pine, is one of the most potent antioxidants known. OPC’s trap reactive oxygen species including hydroxyl radicals, peroxyl radicals, and lipid radicals; they also delay the breakdown phase of lipid peroxidation. OPC’s inhibit platelet aggregation in part by raising cGMP levels and protecting against epinephrine renewed cyclic flow reductions. In addition, OPC’s inhibit certain proteolytic enzymes, including collagenase, elastase, beta-glucuronidase and hyaluronidase which can damage the extracellular matrix surrounding capillary walls. This makes OPC’s a useful choice for improving vascular fragility and peripheral vascular insufficiency which can lead to thrombophlebitis.

Atherosclerosis:

An American Epidemic

Atherosclerosis is a narrowing of the arteries caused by an accumulation of fatty deposits on the artery walls. These fatty deposits result in decreased blood flow to the tissues. Additionally, pieces of fat can break loose and block a blood vessel. All arteries may be affected, but the coronary and cerebral vessels are the areas of greatest concern because insufficient blood flow to the heart and brain can quickly become life-threatening.

Atherosclerosis and its complications (coronary heart disease, stroke) are the major cause of death in the United States. Heart attacks alone account for over 20% of all U.S. deaths each year. When death from strokes and atherosclerotic heart disease are added in, the total of atherosclerotic-caused deaths increases to nearly 50% of the U.S. total. This disease costs over 60 billion dollars per year to treat. The suffering caused is incalculable.

Signs and symptoms of atherosclerosis depend on the degree of obstruction and the arteries involved. They may include angina (chest pain), leg cramps (especially when walking), weakness, dizziness, or gradual mental deterioration. Other “minor” symptoms often caused by the decreased blood flow of atherosclerosis include tinnitus (ringing in the ears), impotence, hearing loss, and diminished vision. Often, there are no symptoms prior to an “event” (heart attack, stroke).

The causes of atherosclerosis are largely known: sedentary lifestyle, smoking, dietary imbalances (esp. high trans fat consumption, lack of dietary fiber, lack of dietary antioxidants) and stress. Since these are all controllable risk factors, the individual can do MUCH to prevent and reverse this degenerative process.

It has been known since 1973 that a diagonal earlobe crease is a sign of atherosclerosis. More recent studies have suggested that it is, in fact, one of the most accurate indications of atherosclerosis – more reliable than any other known risk factor, including age, sedentary lifestyle, elevated cholesterol levels, and smoking.

The earlobe has many small blood vessels, known as capillaries. A decrease in blood flow caused by atherosclerosis causes a “collapse” of the vascular bed – and an earlobe crease results. (NOTE: This physical sign does not correlate with atherosclerosis in Orientals, Native Americans, and children with Beckwith’s syndrome.)

While the presence of an earlobe crease does not by itself prove heart disease, it strongly suggests it. If you have an earlobe crease or known atherosclerosis, begin to reverse the condition by following the recommendations here.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Eat a nutritious diet high in nutrients and fiber.
  • Regular aerobic exercise (with your doctor’s clearance). Exercise improves circulation and heart muscle pumping ability. It also helps the body use excess fats and cholesterol for energy.
  • Drink 8 glasses of pure water daily.
  • Maintain a normal body weight.
  • Do not smoke. Substances in tobacco smoke can cause spasm of the blood vessels

Limit caffeine intake to 2 cups (including decaf and caffeinated sodas) per day. Avoid these entirely if arrhythmia is present.

PRIMARY SUPPORT

  • Maxi Multi: 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals. This daily “multiple” contains high potency antioxidants. Optimal (not minimal) doses of antioxidant vitamins including C,E, and beta carotene, plus B complex vitamins, magnesium, selenium and bioflavonoids are particularly important for the heart.
(Amounts will depend on the severity of the disease. Lower doses may be used for health maintenance; higher doses in cases of arrhythmia, angina, and atherosclerosis).
  • Garlic: (Garlitrin 4000®): 1 tablet, once per day with a meal. Other brands, take 1 tab, 3 times per day. Target dose: 10,000mg allicin per day.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

  • L-carnitine: 1 cap (250mg), 3 times per day with meals.
  • Bromelain: 1 cap (2400mcu), 3 times per day BETWEEN meals.

DR. MYATT’S COMMENT

Liver (Hepatic) Detoxification Profile

Liver (Hepatic) Detoxification Profile

The liver processes toxins, drugs and even components of food in a two-step enzymatic process. If either of these “Phase I” or “Phase II” liver enzymes are out of sync, toxins can be rendered moretoxic and remain in the body longer.

This simple urine test (a single collection of first-morning urine) shows:

  • The status of phase I and phase II detoxification enzymes
  • Assessment of chemical exposure and impaired liver function

This test is also a reliable marker for exposure to toxic chemicals as seen in the D-glucaric acid levels.

Hair Mineral Analysis

HAIR MINERAL ANALYSIS

Hair mineral analysis is an accurate, inexpensive test for heavy and toxic metals in the system. It is less reliable for nutritional minerals and the results must be evaluated in context.

Test requires 1 Tablespoon of hair, preferably from nape of neck. A measuring device and instructions are included with the collection kit.

Autoimmune Disorders

A Discussion of Causes and Natural Support

Autoimmune disorders are conditions caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the very same body it was designed to protect. In autoimmune disorders, the immune system, an intricate and amazing defense mechanism of the body, somehow becomes misguided. The effect is the physical equivalent of “friendly fire,” but the results are far from benign or friendly.

Diseases Caused by Autoimmunity

Disease Affected Organ or Tissue Addison’s disease adrenal gland Asthma (many) air passages Atopic dermatitis skin Autoimmune hemolytic anemia red blood cell membranes Chronic active hepatitis liver Crohn’s disease GI tract Glomerulonephritis kidney Goodpasture’s syndrome kidney and lung Grave’s disease thyroid Hashimoto’s thyroiditis thyroid Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura platelets Insulin-dependent diabetes (Type I) pancreatic beta cells Multiple sclerosis brain and spinal cord Myasthenia gravis nerve and muscle synapses Pemphigus/pemphigoid skin Pernicious anemia gastric parietal cells Psoriasis skin Rheumatoid arthritis connective tissue Scleroderma heart, lungs, GI tract, kidney Sjogren’s syndrome liver, kidney, brain, thyroid, salivary glands Spontaneous infertility sperm Systemic lupus erythromatosis (SLE) DNA, platelets Vitiligo melanocytes

Autoimmune disorders can effect other organs and tissues, causing inflammation and degenerative changes in virtually any tissue in the body.

Although the symptoms of autoimmune disease vary, the underlying problem is the same. Normally, the body is able to distinguish between “self” and “non-self.” In autoimmune disorders, the immune system makes antibodies against “self” tissue and actually begins attacking “self.” Often, the attack against “self” progresses to such a degree as to cause tissue injury.

Causes of Autoimmune Disease

A number of different factors can cause autoimmune disease. Foreign antigens (substances not native to the body that trigger immune reactions) can trigger an autoimmune response. Such substances include drugs, heavy metals (found in cigarette smoke, drinking water, polluted air, food, etc), bacteria, viruses and vaccines. Infections and allergies (especially food allergies) are thought to play a major role. Nutritional deficiencies can  weaken the immune system and render it less able to defend the host against foreign “invasion.” Food allergies and sensitivities, an overgrowth of yeast or other non-native “bugs” in the intestinal tract, emotional distress (dis-stress)— in fact, anything that weakens and therefore alters immune system function can be a factor in causing autoimmune disease. Sometimes  genetic weakness appears to play a role.

Conventional Medicine Treatment of Autoimmune Disease

Conventional medicine treats autoimmune disorders by managing the symptoms and/or suppressing immune function. Suppression of the immune system with corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs can offer relief during and acute crisis, but they do not help correct the underlying cause of the problem. Many of these medications are quite toxic and cause further deterioration of the immune system.

Anti-inflammatory agents are also used to treat symptoms but they, too, do not contribute to cure. In fact, conventional medicine makes no attempt to cure autoimmune diseases, only to keep them in remission. The long-term prognosis is often a gradual worsening of the condition, usually marked by exacerbations (“flare-ups”) and remissions.

Natural Medicine Treatment of Autoimmune Disease

Since autoimmune diseases are caused by auto-antibodies, the question to ask is, “What is causing this person to make auto-antibodies?” Most natural medicine experts believe that autoantibodies are produced in response to an infection or allergen. When the offending infection(s) or allergen(s) is removed, production of these destructive autoantibodies stops.

With such a number of potential causative factors, evaluating the “particulars” of each individual case is important.  For this reason, a personal telephone consultation with Dr. Myatt is highly recommended.

There is still good news for sufferers of autoimmune disorders. Many factors that contribute to this problem can be identified and changed, thereby altering the course of the disease. By discontinuing sources of possible toxicity, improving nutritional status, strengthening the immune system and managing emotional stress in a productive way, there is much that can be done for autoimmune diseases. Even for people who may have a genetic weakness that predisposes to autoimmune disease, suffering is not inevitable. Most inborn weaknesses can be compensated for by healthful lifestyle and dietary practices. Dramatic improvements are possible for those who are willing to use health-promoting lifestyle changes and strategies!

Diet And Lifestyle Recommendations

Food allergies and/or sensitivities are felt to be a major factor in most autoimmune cases. Although many types of food allergy testing are available, most are not reliable. There is only one laboratory that I use and recommend for food allergy testing. Although the testing is not inexpensive, the results are invaluable for those with any autoimmune condition.

Primary Support

  • Maxi Multi: 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals. This daily “multiple” contains high potency antioxidants. If you use another formula, be sure to use only those that are hypoallergenic, since additives in vitamin supplements can cause reactions.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids:
    Flax seed meal
, 2 teaspoons per day with food
    OR
Flax seed capsules: 2-4 caps, 3 times per day (target dose range: 6-12 caps per day)
    OR
Flax seed oil: 1 tablespoon per day
    OR
Max EPA (Omega-3 rich fish oil): 1-2 caps, 3 times per day with meals (target dose: 3-6 caps per day).An imbalance of Omega 6: Omega 3 fatty acid ratios, common in the American diet, leads to hypersensitivity and excess inflammation. Increasing Omega-3 fatty acid intake decreases the tendency to inflammation and “hyper” immune reactions.
  • Similase: 1-2 caps, 3 times per day with meals. This digestive enzyme formula improves digestion and absorption of foods. It is known that incomplete protein digestion can trigger allergies, especially those that are food-related.
  • COX-2-Support: 3 caps, 1-2 times per day between meals. This is an all-natural, safe, effective herbal formula for normalizing inflammatory response.

Additional Support

  • DHEA: Low levels of DHEA are seen in many of the autoimmune diseases, and higher daily intake of DHEA is associated with improvement of symptoms in many. A typical daily dose of DHEA for autoimmunity would be 50-200mg per day. However, since DHEA is a hormone, doses in excess of 50mg per day should be supervised by a physician. A male hormone profile or female hormone profile which includes evaluation of DHEA should be performed at the beginning of treatment to monitor hormone levels.
  • Grape Seed Extract: 1 cap, 3 times per day with meals. (Target dose: 150-300mg daily). Grape seed extract acts as a natural anti-histamine with a more immediate effect than vitamin C. It is also a potent antioxidant.
