B Vitamins

The “Energy Vitamins”

B vitamins comprise an entire complex or “family” of related but different vitamins. Together, the B vitamins comprise an important group of vitamins with many functions, as seen in the chart below. Although their individual functions differ, all B vitamins are involved in energy production in the body. Deficiencies of B vitamins are common today due to food processing.

B vitamin supplementation is useful for:

  • chronic fatigue
  • overweight and obesity
  • memory loss
  • heart disease
  • depression
  • cataracts
  • neuropathy
  • irritability
  • atherosclerosis
  • anemia and more (see chart below).

Maxi Multi is a comprehensive multi-vitamin and mineral formula that includes high potency B complex vitamins. Click here for a full description of this supplement.

SMOKING…….JUST THE FACTS

  • Smoking weakens the immune system by inhibiting cellular immunity.
  • Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide, a substance that is toxic to the brain.
  • Tobacco smoking is associated with a higher incidence of gingivitis and tooth loss.
  • Tobacco smoke contains cadmium, a heavy metal that can cause high blood pressure, kidney stones, and other toxic symptoms.
  • Tobacco smoke induces the formation of free radicals – highly reactive molecules that can bind to normal, healthy cells and destroy them.
  • Smokers have a higher incidence of peptic ulcer disease, a decreased response to anti-ulcer medications, and a higher mortality from peptic ulcer.
  • Female smokers are at higher risk of developing osteoporosis.
  • Female smokers are at higher risk for premature menopause.
  • Smoking accelerates skin aging and wrinkle formation.
  • Smoking causes a decrease in penile blood flow and can cause impotence in males.
  • Smokers have a three to five-fold increase in coronary artery disease compared to non-smokers.
  • Smoking is associated with the development of urinary tract cancer, bowel cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical and uterine cancer – and yes, lung cancer.
  • Smoking is a potent risk factor for atherosclerosis.
  • 40% of heavy smokers die before they reach retirement age.
  • Nicotine causes adrenaline release, which can cause anxiety, heart palpitations, diarrhea, and high blood pressure.
  • Hydrogen cyanide, a chemical in tobacco smoke, causes inflammation of the bronchi which leads to bronchitis. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema often eventually result.
  • The adrenal stimulation caused by nicotine can aggravate hypoglycemia. Eventually, adrenal exhaustion results.
  • The American Lung Association reports that 350,000 Americans die each year from cigarette smoking. This is more than the combined deaths from illegal drugs, traffic accidents, suicide, homicide, and alcohol.

Don’t Kid Yourself.
Smoking tobacco is incompatible with a healthy lifestyle.

HIGH CHOLESTEROL

Natural Treatment And Support Strategies

High cholesterol levels (above 200mg/dl) are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, and atherosclerosis is a leading cause of heart disease, strokes, and other circulatory disorders. Fortunately, since most cases of high cholesterol are caused by diet and lifestyle, they can be reversed by self-care measures. If cholesterol levels do not improve in 12 weeks of self-care, consult an holistic physician for further guidance.

It is also important to note that cardiovascular disease can occur in people with normal cholesterol levels. In fact, half of the people who have a heart attack have a cholesterol level under 200. Total cholesterol levels are important, but they are far from being the entire story of what causes atherosclerosis and heart disease. Other risk factors, such as elevated homocysteine and CReactive Protein (hs-CRP), are independent risk factors. To truly determine your risk for heart disease, consult a holistic physician who can evaluate each of your risk factors, not just cholesterol. Many people with cholesterol levels below 200 mg/dl still suffer heart attacks and stroke.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Maintain a normal body weight.
  • Eat “Super Foods,” especially garlic and soy products. Fiber in food and/or supplements helps bind cholesterol and carry it out of the body. Be sure your diet is high in fiber.
  • Engage in regular aerobic exercise.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Drink 64 ounces of pure water daily. Water detoxifies the liver, which is the organ responsible for managing cholesterol in the body.

PRIMARY SUPPORT

  • Maxi Multi: 3 caps, 3 times per day with meals. This daily “multiple” contains high potency antioxidants. Optimal (not minimal) doses of antioxidants (ACES), calcium, magnesium, selenium, chromium, bioflavonoids and B complex vitamins are particularly important for normal cholesterol levels.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids:
Flax seed meal, 2 teaspoons per day with food
    OR
    Flax seed capsules
: 2-4 caps, 3 times per day (target dose range: 6-12 caps per day)
    OR
    Flax seed oil
    : 1 tablespoon per day
    OR
    Max EPA
(Omega-3 rich fish oil): 1-2 caps, 3 times per day with meals (target dose: 3-6 caps per day).
  • CoQ10 (50-100mg): 1 cap, 2-3 times per day with meals (target dose range: 150-400mg per day).
  • Flush-Free Niacin: Begin with 1 cap, 3 times per day with meals. After two weeks, increase dose to 2 caps, 3 times per day or as directed by a physician (target dose range: 1,500-3,000mg per day). Liver enzymes should be monitored by a physician every 3 months for the first six months of treatment. [NOTE: In the Coronary Drug Project Study, niacin was compared to cholesterol-lowering drugs. It was found that niacin was the ONLY “drug” that lowered mortality. It compared favorably to cholesterol-lowering drugs in effect but with a much better safety profile.]
    AND/OR
  • Red Rice Yeast (600mg): 2 caps, 2 times per day with meals (target dose: minimum 2,000mg per day).

Take Red Rice Yeast in addition to niacin if 8 weeks of niacin therapy does not lower cholesterol to <220mg/dl cholesterol. Take instead of niacin if niacin is not well tolerated.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

  • Oral ChelatoRx: 4 capsules, 2 times per day between meals. This formula contains garlic, gugulipid, EDTA (chelating agent), chlorella, magnesium, potassium, and more. It is a comprehensive formula for lowering cholesterol levels and clearing the arteries.
  • Garlic (Garlitrin): 1 tab per day (target dose: minimum 4,000 allicin per day).

TESTS

  • Thyroid function tests should be performed to rule out low thyroid function. These are conventional medical tests that most medical doctors will order as part of a physical. (It should be included in a physical work-up for high cholesterol). Conventional doctors usually only do a TSH test for screening, but T3 and T4 should also be evaluated.

Dr. MYATT’S COMMENTS

  • If you are overweight, a ketogenic diet, particularly The Super Fast Diet, will help you easily lose weight, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and correct high blood sugar levels if they exist.
  • There are so many natural treatments for high cholesterol, and cholesterol-lowering drugs have so many negative side effects, that it is worthwhile to work with an holistic physician if your self-help measures fail to improve cholesterol levels in three to six months.
  • Be SURE to supplement CoQ10 if you are taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) or Red Rice Yeast, as these drugs deplete CoQ10. Adequate CoQ10 levels are necessary for normal heart function.

Herbs for Metabolism and Weight Loss

Dana Myatt, N.D.

Definition: Overweight is body fat in excess often pounds above lean body mass index. Obesity is defined as 20% excess fat above lean body mass index. (BMI).1

Scope of the Problem: An estimated 34% of American adults are overweight with 25% being fully obese.2 more recent studies have suggested that as many as 75% of the adult population is at least some degree above their ideal body mass index.

Risk; Excess body fat is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, Type II diabetes, stroke (cerebrovascalar accident)3, various cancers (including prostate, all gynecological cancers4 5, gallbladder and colon cancer), benign prostatic hypertrophy6, cholelithiasis, infertility, arthritis, degenerative joint disease7, and impaired immune function.8 At only ten pounds above lean body mass index, most of these risks are increased, and the risk increases with increasing body fat.9 Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. This makes overweight/obesity the single biggest controllable risk factor for disease, and offers a major opportunity for disease prevention and risk intervention.

DMSA (DiMercapto Succinic Acid)

Oral Chelation for Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead and Mercury

DMSA (DiMercapto Succinic Acid)DMSA (meso-2,-3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) is a water soluble sulfhydryl-containing metal chelator that binds to arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. It is effective when taken orally and has been used since the 1950’s as chelator of heavy metals in the body.

According to Ward Dean, M.D., “Research confirms this substance’s efficacy and safety, and supports its use as the premier oral metal chelator for mercury and its efficacy for other heavy metals. DMSA’s water-solubility, oral dosing, large therapeutic window and low toxicity make it the chelator of choice for many applications.”

Although DMSA has a low toxicity, side effects can include rash, nausea or vomiting. Discontinue use of product and consult an holistic physician if these symptoms occur. Do not use during pregnancy or childhood except under the supervision of a physician.

Dr. Myatt’s Note: This is the chelator I recommend for use with a 6-hour urine mineral test to detect the presence of heavy metals in the body. When using DMSA on an ongoing basis for oral chelation, please use under the guidance of an holistic physician.

SORRY! Due to FDA regulation his safe and effective supplement is no longer available for sale without a prescription.

The FDA has ruled that it cannot be sold – it seems that there is a prescription drug available that contains the exact same ingredients, so the FDA must “protect” us from the non-prescription supplement form of DMSA.

Your tax dollars, hard at work – “protecting” us all from anything that has not been FDA “approved”! (FDA approval just means that the drug company has paid millions of dollars in licensing and approval fees to the FDA.)

IREST Massager Mini

The Tiny Technologic Marvel With Huge Health Benefits

The IREST Massager Mini is a dual channel battery operated muscle stimulation system (TENS unit) that helps to relieve minor muscle aches and pains.

What is TENS?
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy that uses low-voltage electrical current for pain relief. It can also be used for muscle stimulation.

Patients tell us they use TENS-type devices to relieve pain from many illnesses and conditions.

Some common uses are to treat muscle, joint, or bone problems that occur with illnesses such as osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia, or for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, or bursitis. Many people have also used their TENS to treat sudden, acute pain from muscle strain or overuse, and even labor pain, and chronic pain such as cancer pain. Diabetics have reported good results with the use of these devices to improve diabetic neuropathy. Bodybuilders use these devices both for soothing relief after a workout, and as a muscle stimulator for very tergeted muscle exercise (Like working a biceps for example).

The IREST Massager Mini is the best unit of it’s kind that we have been able to find.

Dr. Myatt and Nurse Mark have personally purchased and tested a number of different units. The units we tested ranged from bargain-basement junk that delivered outright shocks (Ouch!) to medical-grade, prescription-required units (with a price tag of $1400.00!) that were complicated and annoying to use and didn’t actually work veryt well. We believe the high-quality construction and superior operation of the IREST makes it the “best in class.”

So what does this little wonder do? By providing mild electrical current to muscles, the unit increases circulation, provides pain relief and muscle stimulation. Medically, these devices are prescribed for muscle and nerve pain.

The IREST has six different settings, all feeling like different types of massage or acupuncture. You can adjust the strength of impulse from almost impercetable to very strong.

How well does it work? Dr. Myatt got a patient off narcotic pain drugs in a single session by using this unit for back pain. This was a pateint who failed to respond to a $1400 prescription TENS unit.

Says Dr. Myatt: “I believe one of these devices needs to be in everyone’s medical kit. It is right up there with aspirin and bandaids in importance. I have one and use it regularly!

  • Pocket-size / Compact Design – Smaller than an i-pod!
  • Rechargeable battery
  • 2 Output channels- treat 2 different areas at the same time, or two people can share a treatment.
  • 6 massage modes
  • 20 intensity level settings
  • Adjustable treatment time settings
  • 2 Year manufacturers warranty Now with extended 5 Year manufacturers warranty

Find more information on the Massager Mini at the IREST website

Suggested retail price is $349. Because Dr. Myatt believes so strongly in the benefits of these devices she has negotiated a lower price and is offering these units at a substantial savings. You save $129.00!

About Recharging Adaptors:

The iRest Mini Massager uses an internal rechargeable battery that is recharged between uses with a power adaptor that plugs into a wall outlet.

We have had a number of inquiries from people who have misplaced their recharging adaptor and are seeking a replacement. We do NOT have these adapters available for sale seperately.

But, all is not lost! These recharging adapters are very common, generic “wall-wart’ power adapters commonly used to recharge cellphones, tablets, music players, and similar electronic devices. They can be purchased readily and inexpensively at stores like Best Buy, Radio Shack, WalMart, Target, K-mart, grocery stores, and even thrift stores often have them available for a few dollars.

You just need a generic charger with a ‘Mini USB’ plug to fit your iRest.
